The president of the United States is a crazy raving helplessly tortured soul, but the world is waking up. I see it every single day.
I was eating dinner this evening outside my favorite restaurant on Mississippi Avenue when a young man passed by my table and for a second it looked like he was carrying an order to another table and I thought he was one of the regular guys who worked there, and I said, “Hello, Aiden.”
His head turned and he was not Aiden, and he said, “Nope, I’m not Aiden” and I said, “Oh, sorry,” and he said, “No worries!” and then quickly added, still walking to his own table while maintaining eye contact, “I’m Bennett. Nice to meet you,” with a little twinkle of warmth in his eye.
I of course said, “Good to meet you as well. I’m Marc.” Or something like that.
Maybe I didn’t even have to say “good to meet you as well.” I might have just tapped my chest and said “Marc.” Yeah, that’s probably what happened. All perfectly understood.
Maybe it’s just Portland, Oregon but years ago I just don’t remember people being so casually extraordinarily nice on a regular basis. But this is the energy I see all the time lately. And it blows my mind. People are so kind, kinder than they’ve ever been I think.
I mean, I’m just saying, I grant you it was a tiny moment but that guy did not have to make that slight extra effort to be friendly and to dispel any awkwardness I might have felt in misidentifying him. I really felt it in my heart.
