A few years ago, I was playing the Higher Thought game with some people and the question “Is everything ultimately forgivable? (Why, or why not?)” came up.
One guy answered, “Yes. Because freedom is infinite.”
At the moment I had no idea what he was talking about. We were all very stoned, and I assumed that his answer was just some mushy stony navel-gazing BS, which I didn’t mind of course.
But I found that his remark stuck with me for days, until I realized its brilliance.
What does forgiveness do for the one who forgives?
It sets the person free, in their heart and mind.
One other way to put it might be: It increases that person’s internal freedom and spaciousness.
So what the guy was saying was that the human spirit’s capacity for freedom has no bounds, and therefore it follows that the capacity to forgive knows no bounds. Ultimately.
